Delegation Reacts to Johnson’s Election as Speaker of the House

Representative Mike Johnson of Louisiana is the new U.S. Speaker of the House after weeks of turmoil of Republicans trying to designate a new leader. This comes three weeks after Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted after brokering a deal to prevent a government shutdown.

Here is how Oklahoma’s U.S. House Delegation reacted to Johnson’s election as Speaker.

Congressman Frank Lucas:

“Congratulations to our new Speaker – a true conservative and a principled leader – Mike Johnson. I look forward to getting the House back in order so that we can tackle the issues facing our country at home and abroad. Like my colleagues in Washington and my constituents in Oklahoma, I am excited for this next chapter of leadership in our country.”

Congressman Tom Cole:

“I am proud to congratulate my colleague and friend, Mike Johnson, on being elected the 56th Speaker of the House. Mike has been an instrumental leader in the Republican Conference during his time in office, first leading the Republican Study Committee and more recently as Vice Chairman of the House Republican Conference. A principled Louisianan, he has a plan to finish the House’s work and secure the southern border. I have full faith in his ability to lead this body and look forward to working with him.”

Congressman Kevin Hern:

“Congrats, Speaker Mike Johnson! You’re going to make an incredible Speaker of the House, and I can’t wait to help where I can.”

Congresswoman Stephanie Bice:

“Today, I voted in strong support of Mike Johnson as Speaker of the House. Earlier this year, I gave the nomination speech for Mike when he ran for Vice Chairman of the Republican Conference, and I know firsthand that Mike is a steadfast conservative that has the ability to unite our conference.

“We are at an unprecedented time. We must secure the southern border and work to pass a spending bill before the November 17th deadline. On the international front, we have the largest invasion in Europe since WWII, the Middle East is a tinderbox, our troops have been attacked, and terrorists are emboldened.

“Democracy is messy; however, it is crucial that we abandon the idea of pitting us against one another. Now is the time to come together and continue pushing our pro-American and pro-growth agenda. We must be laser focused. Let’s get back to work.”

Congressman Josh Brecheen:

“Rep. Mike Johnson is admired by the entire Republican Conference because of his integrity, his humility, and his commitment to put the best interests of the country over his own political self-interest. A former constitutional lawyer who worked on religious liberty issues, Rep. Johnson is a man who has a deep rudder of faith and understands that our nation must return to founding principles. I was honored to vote for him and congratulate him on being elected Speaker.”
