Walters Proposes Changes to School Accreditation System

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters wants to change how the State Board of Education handles school accreditation by tying it to performance on standardized tests for language arts and math. He outlined his proposal at Thursday’s State Board of Education meeting.

Tulsa World’s Lenzy Krehbiel-Burton writes Walters plan is to give a school district a deficiency if at least half its students score at below-basic level.

The final draft of the new rules is expected next week. The State Board of Education could vote on the proposal in January.
