Walters Claims Media Lying About Teacher Bonus Program

Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters believes some local media outlets are lying about a teacher recruitment program which he calls the most successful in state history.

He points the finger at Oklahoma Watch and StateImpact Oklahoma, which are non-profit news organizations. Their reporters found some of the teachers were being asked to repay the bonuses because the State Department of Education found they did not qualify after the payment was made. They have until the end of February to repay the money.

The Oklahoman’s Murray Evans writes Walters held a press conference Wednesday to question some of the reporting but did not provide specific errors.

The media outlets are standing by their reporting.
