Eviction Process Reform Moves to Full Senate

Senate Bill 1575 would extend the window for an eviction trail from a minimum of five days to ten days and increase the summons timeline. However, the legislation leaves the shorter trial timeline in place for damaged property or criminal activities which lead to the eviction process. The Senate Judiciary Committee approved the bill on Tuesday.

Senator Julia Kirt is the bill’s Senate author.

“SB 1575 puts in statute what responsible, fair landlords already do when tenants can’t pay,” said Kirt. “The bill will still enable landlords to move quickly when they have tenants that have damaged their property or are using it for criminal activities. For other cases, we’ve simply added 5 days between filing and the earliest possible court date.”

The full Senate can now take up the bill.
