Thompson Aims to Regulate Food Additives

Oklahoma Senator Kristen Thompson has filed legislation to restrict the use of certain food additives in Oklahoma. She cites growing concerns about the additives which could lead to health issues.

Thompson says by restricting the use of the additives in food Oklahomans consume there is a good chance that will improve health outcomes in the state.

“For too long Oklahoma has ranked near the bottom in overall health outcomes. I believe this legislation will begin to reverse this negative trend, leading to a healthier state. As a mom of three, I have experienced firsthand the adverse effects of chemicals and preservatives in our foods. This legislation is about putting the health and safety of Oklahoma’s children and families first. Our children deserve a healthy start in life, free from exposure to harmful chemicals during critical stages of their development. I hope this legislation acts to shine a light on the harmful chemicals in food and will give us the ability to further this conversation and put Oklahoma on a better trajectory for health outcomes,” said Thompson.

The legislation, Senate Bill 4, lists several additives and puts the responsibility of creating the rules around the regulation with the Oklahoma State Board of Agriculture.

The food additives are Blue dye 1, Blue dye 2, Brominated vegetable oil, Green dye 3, Potassium bromate, Propylparaben, Red dye 3, Red dye 40, Titanium dioxide, Yellow dye 5, Yellow dye 6.

Thompson points out that other countries have banned or restricted the use of these additives to improve health outcomes.
