Senate Democratic Leader Julia Kirt is working on two bills which would provide tax relief for Oklahomans struggling with rising costs. Senate Bill 72 updates the state’s sales tax relief credit. Senate Bill 71 creates a tax credit for people who rent their homes.
“Oklahomans deserve the opportunity to build a more prosperous future, yet for the past several years, we’ve seen tax cut proposals that overwhelmingly benefit only the wealthiest in the state. These bills will put money back in the pockets of those who need it most,” said Kirt.
SB 72 raises the sales tax relief credit from $40 per person to $200 per person, including dependents.
SB 71 creates a $110 annual credit for renters.
“Everyone needs a home, but many working Oklahomans can’t afford to buy a house. Most spend half of their income on rent, which continues to rise,” Kirt said. “No one should have to choose between keeping a roof over their family’s head and being able to buy food, medicine, or gas to get to work. I remain committed to real solutions for working families.”
