Senate Bill 1027 has received the signature of Governor Kevin Stitt which will make citizen driven initiative petitions to put issues before voters more difficult. The measure limits how many valid voter signatures can be collected in any one county.
Tulsa World’s Steve Metzer writes that Republican lawmakers drafted the legislation to shift influence over the initiative petition process away from urban areas and into more rural areas.
For state statues, petitions cannot have more than 11.5% of the total number of votes cast in that county in the last general election for governor.
That number is raised to 20.8% for proposed changes to the Oklahoma Constitution.
