US Senator James Lankford introduced new legislation aimed at preventing medical students and residents from being pressured to participate in abortion training that conflicts with their personal beliefs. The Conscience Protections for Medical Residents Act creates federal safeguards to ensure trainees are not forced to choose between their convictions and their medical careers.
“Medical residents should never be pressured to violate their beliefs in order to finish their training or advance in their careers,” Lankford said. He added that many enter the profession to protect life, and the bill is designed to let them follow their convictions without jeopardizing their futures.
Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D., who coauthored the bill, said current training pressures leave residents vulnerable to retaliation. “Medical residents should not be compelled to participate in abortion training if it violates their conscience,” Murphy said. He argued that abortion is not comparable to lifesaving care for miscarriages or ectopic pregnancies and said the goal is to restore a non ideological environment in medical education.
