More than 203,000 acres have burned across Oklahoma since last week, prompting Governor Kevin Stitt to announce a coordinated statewide plan aimed at strengthening wildfire preparedness in the weeks ahead.
“Oklahomans are resilient, and I’m committed to doing everything I can to help them rebuild their homes, businesses, and lives,” Stitt said during a press conference. “What matters most is that everyone stays safe. We can replace buildings, but we can’t replace lives.”
The Governor said Oklahoma’s response to recent fires helped protect lives and property as drought conditions, dry vegetation and unseasonably warm temperatures intensify fire risk across the state and surrounding region.
The coordinated strategy involves the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management, Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, Oklahoma National Guard and Oklahoma Department of Public Safety. The plan emphasizes using in-state resources for faster deployment and flexibility.
The Oklahoma National Guard has mobilized hand crews and is working jointly with Oklahoma Forestry Services. Two Blackhawk helicopters are on active duty in Tulsa, and a Chinook helicopter is available in Lexington. Forestry Services will preposition fire suppression teams in Atoka, Lawton, Guymon, Woodward, Weatherford, Skiatook, Stillwater and Shawnee.
The State Emergency Operations Center will remain activated with expanded 24-hour staffing to support local jurisdictions requesting assistance.
The Ranger Road Fire in Beaver and Harper counties is among the largest incidents reported. At least four firefighters have been injured responding to fires statewide.
Stitt said the state is taking proactive steps to prepare for an extended period of elevated fire danger and credited coordination among state agencies, rural and municipal firefighters and emergency managers.
State officials are urging residents to monitor local fire conditions, follow county burn bans and safety guidance, and report wildfires by calling 911.
