The U.S. Senate confirmed U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin as the newest Secretary of Homeland Security. The vote was 54 to 45.
Mullin is taking over at the Department of Homeland Security while there is a funding impasse between Senate Republican and Democrats over reforms for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Patrol (CPB).
U.S. Senator James Lankford spoke before the nomination vote providing a biography of Mullin’s life and career. He also took the chance to call for the Senators to solve the issue and stop the partial government shutdown.
Once the results of the vote was announced reactions started to surface.
Oklahoma Senate President Pro Tem Lonnie Paxton said that Mullin’s confirmation is a testament to his leadership, work ethic and commitment to public service.
“The Department of Homeland Security plays a critical role in safeguarding our nation, and I am confident Secretary Mullin will bring a strong, steady hand to this position during an important time for our country. His experience and leadership will be invaluable as he works to secure our borders, support law enforcement and protect American families,” said Paxton.
Oklahoma Senator Tom Woods, who represents Mullin’s hometown of Westville, also sent a word of congratulations.
“Secretary Mullin has stood strong with President Trump and will be a tremendous asset to the Cabinet. He will continue to advance the Trump Administration’s America First policies to secure the Southern border and uphold the safety of the American people and the security of the homeland.
“His Oklahoma roots give him firsthand knowledge and experience that will serve him well in his oversight of FEMA and responding to natural disasters across the nation. His vision for FEMA will ensure that local communities are actively involved in response coordination and that rural communities are not left behind,” said Woods.
Governor Kevin Stitt is expected to name on Tuesday who will fill in as Mullin leaves the Senate.
