Drummond Joins Call for Social Media Warning Label

Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond has joined with 41 other state attorneys general in a letter to Congress calling for the Surgeon General to put a warning on social media platforms which use algorithms. The aim is to put a mental health warning for young people on those social media platforms.

The group says a growing body of research indicates young people who use social media are more likely to suffer psychological harm including depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts.

“American children are in the throes of a mental health crisis. While social media addiction is not the sole culprit, there is no denying that it is a significant factor,” Drummond said. “Parents and young people deserve to be fully informed of the situation.”

Drummond filed a lawsuit last year against Meta for designing harmful features on Instagram, Facebook, and other social media platforms.
