Harrah attorney Lance Cargill, Republican former Speaker of the House and now a political consultant, apparently has joined forces with Ed Shadid, candidate for mayor of Oklahoma City.
While Cargill’s exact role in Shadid’s campaign isn’t known, The Oklahoman reports that the former speaker filed the city councilor’s petition to end MAPS 3 early and scuttle plans for the new convention center.
Cargill is a consultant to several freshman GOP legislators and Republican Insurance Commissioner John Doak; his new affiliation with Green Party Shadid fuels speculation he may be working across ideological aisles.
Shadid’s public problems won’t be new to Cargill, who resigned as speaker after he failed to pay some business and personal taxes on time, and amid a high-profile ethics investigation into the mishandling of campaign dollars.

Is he working for the MAYOR race, or the PETITION drive? Those are two different things. I would be happy to help the petition drive, but that is a very different thing – and an entirely different campaign – than the Mayor’s race. Mr. Cargill is working on the OKC Term Limits Now effort as well, and the knowledge from that is directly applicable to other petition drives.
Ending the MAPS tax early is very Republican.
We can’t vote on this; but we agree….OKC doesn’t need ANOTHER convention center. They need to end maps3 early, stop the silly trolly cars and work on and spend money on other parts of OKC rather than downtown. the roads are horrible, lots of empty business buildings and the crime rate is to high.
It seems the same folks who argue we need non-partisan races are upset about a Republican, former legislator working on a non-partisan race.
I favor allowing the parties to nominate in any race. After all, we already allow candidates to run non-partisan in every race. All they have to do is run as an independent.
So who are the consultants on Mick Cornett’s campaign? And who were the consultants on the MAP3 campaign? That information might shed some light on why this is an “issue”. Could it be that the Cornett campaign doesn’t want any competition?
BTW, I am NOT a supporter of Shadid and can’t vote in the election. It just seems that we aren’t getting the whole story on why Speaker Cargill’s involvement in either the mayoral race or the petition drive are even news worthy. Just a thought!
Hmmm. Rather Machievellian of Shadid. I wonder if he’ll be able to keep all of his stories straight. Don’t slip and tell OCPAC that you want to use taxpayer money to support education, end poverty, build a citywide bus system for the poor, take care of the mentally ill and defund the zoo! But don’t tell OCPAC too many whoppers either, because you might anger the few progressive Democrats who are still swallowing.
This is last year news, Cargill was at the presser that Shadid had with his x-wife back in Dec. And yes He working both the Mayor race and the Petition drive. Cargill was not the only odd person at it. Just FYI: I was hire by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to video it.
