Rep. Jeff Coody, Lawton, has been honored as the “2015 Legislator of the Year” by the Oklahoma Rifle Association.
Presentation of the award was made during ceremonies at the 2015 ORA State Convention in Midwest City.
Coody was cited for authorship and actions that ultimately resulted in adoption of HB2040, the “Oklahoma Safe Schools Act.”
The bill primarily addresses safety concerns of rural Oklahoma schools which may be confronted with delayed response time by law enforcement. Under provisions of the act, handguns may be carried into any public secondary school by school personnel who have successfully completed “a special reserve school resource officer course” administered by the State. The bill became immediately effective upon approval by Gov. Mary Fallin on May 12, 2015.
