McCortney Loses Primary

It appears that Senator Greg McCortney will not hold the gavel as the next Senate President Pro Tem.

McCortney lost to Jonathan Wingard for the Senate District 13 seat. That covers the southern Oklahoma counties of Garvin, Hughes, McClain, Murray, and Pontotoc. The vote margin was around 250 votes. (58 of 59 precincts reporting at the time of publication)

During the regular session, the Senate Republican Caucus tapped McCortney to be the next Pro Tem, succeeding term-limited Pro Tem Greg Treat. McCortney rose through the ranks to reach Majority Floor Leader. He’s been in the Senate since 2016.

Instead, Wingard, an Oklahoma National Guard combat veteran, will join the other 47 Oklahoma Senators in the 60th Oklahoma Legislature this fall.
