The Oklahoma State Department of Education has published its proposed rules for consideration and public comment. Among them, a rule to require public schools to ask for proof of U.S. citizenship or legal immigration status during student enrollment.
Oklahoma Voice’s Nuria Martinez-Keel writes State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters said his administration suggested the policy as a way to end “sanctuary schools.”
Critics of the proposed rule believe it could have a chilling effect on student enrollment.
A public comment period on all of the proposed rules is open. The rules must be approved by the Oklahoma State Board of Education and the Legislature to go into effect.
