Oklahoma Lawmakers Launch Bipartisan Caucus to Support Regional Universities

A group of Oklahoma lawmakers has formed a new bipartisan caucus aimed at supporting the state’s regional university system and its role in workforce development.

Oklahoma Senator Kelly Hines and Oklahoma Representative Ronny Johns will co-chair the Regional University System of Oklahoma Caucus, which brings together legislators who are alumni of RUSO schools or who support the system’s mission of providing affordable, accessible higher education.

“RUSO universities play a vital role in expanding opportunity and strengthening communities across Oklahoma,” Hines said. “This caucus brings together legislators from both parties who understand the importance of accessible, affordable higher education and want to ensure these institutions continue to serve students and meet the needs of our state.”

The caucus includes both Republican and Democratic members, reflecting broad legislative support for regional universities and their role in preparing students for careers in education, healthcare, business and public service.

“RUSO universities are one of the strongest workforce pipelines we have in Oklahoma,” Johns said. “About 95 percent of their graduates stay and work in Oklahoma after graduation, which means we are investing in students who go on to strengthen our communities and drive economic growth.”

The Regional University System of Oklahoma oversees six public universities across the state, including East Central University, Northeastern State University, Northwestern Oklahoma State University, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Southwestern Oklahoma State University and the University of Central Oklahoma.

RUSO Board Chairwoman Jane McDermott said the caucus highlights a shared commitment between lawmakers and higher education leaders to keep those institutions affordable and responsive to the state’s workforce needs.

The caucus is expected to focus on strengthening collaboration between lawmakers and university leaders while promoting policies that support student success and address workforce demands across Oklahoma.
