Drummond Launches Investigation Into Oklahoma Medicaid Fraud

Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond has launched an investigation into how the Oklahoma Health Care Authority handled allegations of fraud, waste and abuse in the state’s Medicaid managed care program.

Drummond said the investigation follows reports that OHCA failed to notify his office about what he described as a large-scale, foreign-based scheme involving fraudulent Medicaid enrollments.

“Medicaid exists to protect Oklahoma’s most vulnerable residents, not to become a target for international fraud rings,” Drummond said.

According to the Attorney General’s office, OHCA received reports of suspected fraud from managed care entities but referred relatively few cases to the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit. Drummond said his office also was not informed about the alleged enrollment scheme despite repeated requests for information about potential fraud.

The investigation follows Drummond’s earlier request for the State Auditor and Inspector to conduct an audit of OHCA.

The Attorney General’s office is also encouraging Oklahomans who received a Medicaid enrollment packet they did not request to submit a Medicaid Enrollment Fraud Report, saying the information will help investigators identify potential victims and gather additional information.
