Drummond Praises FERC Decision to Dismiss Kiamichi River Hydroelectric Proposal

Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond praised the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s decision to dismiss a proposed hydroelectric power plant on the Kiamichi River in Pushmataha County. Drummond is an opponent of the plan proposed by the Southeast Oklahoma Power Corporation (SEOPC).

“This is a victory for Oklahomans who treasure the Kiamichi River and southeast Oklahoma,” Drummond said. “The power plant threatened harm to property owners, wildlife and the river itself.”

The FERC said that SEOPC did not include requested environmental study plans for the project area, including transmission lines required to transport the generated electricity for use in Texas.

In a letter to the FERC, Drummond told the agency that SEOPC had not requested the proper state licenses and permits for the project and urged the project’s application to be rejected.
