A new national roofing report shows Oklahoma continues to lead the nation in hail-related roof damage, reinforcing the need for programs that help homeowners strengthen their homes against severe weather.
According to the 2025 report from Verisk, nearly half of Oklahoma roofs have been impacted by severe hail over the past four years. The report also found Oklahoma had the highest percentage of roofs damaged by severe hail in 2025, with 64.7% affected.
The report says the average roof replacement cost reached $17,631 this year, a 33% increase from recent years. It also found that nearly 29% of asphalt-shingle roofs have fewer than four years of useful life remaining, making them more vulnerable to storm damage.
Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner Glen Mulready said the findings demonstrate the value of strengthening homes before severe weather strikes.
“This report shows that mitigation not only works but also helps homeowners save money in the long term and generate more value for their homes,” Mulready said.
Mulready encouraged homeowners to apply for the state’s Strengthen Oklahoma Homes program, which offers grants of up to $10,000 to install roofs that meet the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety’s FORTIFIED™ standard. According to the Insurance Department, homeowners with FORTIFIED roofs save an average of $720 per year on their insurance premiums.
Since the program launched in early 2025, the Oklahoma Insurance Department says more than $4 million has been invested to help install 400 FORTIFIED roofs across the state.
