Lucas Backs Bill to End Penny Production

Oklahoma Congressman Frank Lucas is supporting legislation that would end production of the penny and allow the U.S. Mint to produce a less expensive nickel as part of an effort to reduce federal spending.

Lucas spoke on the House floor in support of the Common Cents Act, which would codify President Donald Trump’s directive to the U.S. Treasury to stop producing the one-cent coin. The bill also would give the Mint flexibility to change the composition of the nickel to reduce production costs.
