David B. Hooten is a world-renowned trumpet player, multi-Grammy and -Emmy nominated, but as he enters the hardball world of local politics, he’s learning how harsh the non-musical world can be.
Hooten, also a former restauranteur, is known as the ‘Musician’s Musician” and the “Maker of Memories” for his artistry.
He now seeks the Republican nomination for the State Senate in District 40.
It’s a crowded field for this open Senate seat and while Hooten has his supporters, he has his detractors as well.
Making the rounds now is a list of legal entanglements in Hooten’s past, including a criminal misdemeanor 2001 arrest for DUI and leaving the scene of an accident. He entered guilty pleas to both charges and, records show, completed a community service program. A third traffic charge was dismissed. He paid court costs on the two guilty pleas with a check drawn on his restaurant.
Others in the GOP primary are Reverend Steve Kern, Michael Taylor, Dr. Ervin Yen and businessman Brian Winslow.
Incumbent Senator Cliff Branan, term-limited, is seeking the GOP nomination for the Corporation Commission.
Michael Taylor is also a candidate.
