The chairman of the Oklahoma Democratic Party says officials have narrowed its list of possible candidates in a special election to three to face off against Congressman Markwayne Mullin if a special election is called.
Attorney General Scott Pruitt’s office is still reviewing whether an election will need to be held.
Mullin’s opponent died two days before the November 4 election, so Democrats may be able to appoint a nominee.
The three finalists are hardly heavyweights, signaling that nobody with a name is up to the fight against Mullin, the former Mixed Martial artist who owns a plumbing company in eastern Oklahoma.
Chairman Wallace Collins told The Associated Press the three finalists are term-limited state Senator Jerry Ellis of Valliant, Rep. Ben Sherrer of Choteau and Tahlquah attorney Paul Scheiflebein.
Mullins received more than 70% of the vote in the once Democrat stronghold.
