Ada Republican Greg McCortney has announced his candidacy for the Oklahoma State Senate, District 13.

The district covers portions of Ponotoc, Garvin, Hughes, Pottawatomie and Seminole counties.  Term limits prohibit Sen. Susan Paddock from seeking re-election in 2016.

“I am a product of small town Oklahoma,” McCortney said.  “I grew up attending local public schools and was raised in a local church. I’m a third generation small business owner/operator and am active in local government and civic organizations.”

McCortney said the state Senate needs a conservative who “understands the challenges our families, businesses and everyday citizens face throughout rural Oklahoma and our area.”

McCortney was born in Ada, met his wife Ashley during college and the couple are raising their family in Ada.

After graduating from Ada High School in 1992, McCortney earned a bachelor’s degree from OCU and a Masters of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary. He currently is a Sunday school teacher at Trinity Baptist Church.

After college, McCortney entered full-time ministry, pastoring a church in Norman for several years, and then became chaplain for an Oklahoma City Hospice. McCortney opened McCortney Family Hospice in 2004 and McCortney Family In-home Care in 2008.

Today, McCortney’s family-run hospice and home care businesses employ 90 people with locations in Ada, Norman and Ardmore.

He has been a member of the Ada City Council since 2011, serving as mayor in both 2012 and 2013.
