The State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision’s web site would provide more information on pro-life options and services available to pregnant women under legislation approved by a House committee.
House Bill 2560, by Rep. Sally Kern, would require the State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision to provide website enhanced, user-friendly search capabilities regarding information related to abortion, adoption and services for pregnant women and mothers.
“When a crisis pregnancy occurs, it is important that women can easily obtain information on all the services available to them, including support programs and adoption alternatives,” said Kern, R-Oklahoma City. “Sadly, a lack of information can lead women to choose abortion when they might choose life if they were informed of the support available to them.”
The information provided through the site would be easily printable and user-friendly, and information requests would be kept confidential.
The legislation also requires a physician’s office to give materials about the unborn child at least 24 hours prior to an abortion procedure if the woman is 20 weeks or more pregnant.
“For informed consent to occur, women must have access to all relevant information,” Kern said. “This legislation simply ensures that women will not be denied access to the full spectrum of options available to them.”
House Bill 2560 passed the House Public Health Committee on a 10-1 vote. It now proceeds to the floor of the Oklahoma House of Representatives.
