Female Abuse Guilty Pleas Dog New GOP Executive Director

ryasncard

Mike McCarville

TC Ryan, named executive director of the Oklahoma Republican Party by new Chairman Randy Brogdon, entered guilty pleas to two charges related to female abuse in 2013, an incident that has taken on importance because of his elevation to one of the highest Republican Party positions in the state.

The misdemeanor charges were filed in 2012, after an altercation in Broken Arrow where a child was present. The Supreme Court Network document can be viewed at tcrmugdockett. Ryan was charged with assault and battery and interfering with an emergency telephone call.

Ryan has been a state GOP committeeman active in Tulsa County politics, most often with the more conservative branch. During Brogdon’s campaign for chairman, Ryan was his volunteer traveling companion.

Brogdon told The McCarville Report he is aware of the arrest: “TC is a good friend of mine and is a good example of how God’s grace and redeeming power can change lives. I have traveled and worked with him on campaigns over the last few years. I hired him to be on my team because of his experience, knowledge and excitement that he brings to the party. We are working hard to grow and unite the OKGOP and are looking forward rather than dwelling on the past.”

Ryan did not respond to a request for comment.

ryanfingerThis is not Ryan’s first exposure to public view.

In 2013, he posted a photo on Facebook that created controversy when he was shown making an obscene gesture to a cardboard cutout of Mitt Romney, as Tulsa radio station KFAQ morning host Pat Campbell revealed: http://media.1170kfaq.com/audio/tcryan.mp3.

Some activists called for his resignation as committeeman because of the gesture.

The McCarville Report previously reported on Ryan’s behavior; that was before he became a top Party official: http://mccarvillereport.com/archives/14744

And some activists were mad that he only used one hand in his salute, when two would have been a more complete gesture.

Very happy to see TC in his new role, and he will serve the Party and the Chairman well. Congratulations, my friend!

  2. Ronda Vuillemont-Smith, 05 May, 2015

It is unfortunate that the same OLD people continue to dredge up the same OLD news, trying to discredit a good man. The very people that cried for unity in the Republican Party until their candidate lost, now choose to cause dissention within the party.

TC Ryan is a good man, a hard worker, has a heart for liberty, is loyal to the GOP and I am honored to call him my friend. I will continue to stand with/beside/behind TC Ryan because I know what kind of man he is and I trust him.

TC Ryan has proved himself over and over again these past few years. He has volunteered on numerous campaigns, knocking doors, making phone calls, organizing volunteers for many grassroots conservative candidates. He was instrumental in the defeat of Vision 2, worked tirelessly alongside fellow activists in the defeat of Common Core, was a founding member of ‘Defenders of Liberty’ Grassroots Activism Awards and Liberty on Tap. He served Tulsa County honorably as the state committeeman from 2013-2015.

As far as TC’s past… I thank God for His redemptive grace and unending mercies. The same Jesus that forgives me of my sins, forgives others as well- even men with tattoos, beards and body jewelry.

As far as the picture of him embracing Reagan while flipping off Romney – I get it! And if Ronald Reagan were alive I believe he would get it too. Once again, OLD news! Thank God there were no camera phones when I was younger is all I have to say.

So, do we continue to try to breathe life into this old dead horse so that we can continue beating it by regurgitating old news in an effort to dishonor a good man or do we trust the decision that OK GOP Chair Randy Brogdon has made in appointing TC Ryan as Executive Director.

As far as I’m concerned, the OK GOP couldn’t be in better hands with Randy Brogdon and TC Ryan. I am looking forward to the future of the Oklahoma Republican Party under the leadership of two of my favorite fellas!

Look on the bright side… the GOP is losing the image of being comprised of a bunch of rich, old, white guys – the new look includes tattoos, body piercings and even pink hair!

Please note, I am using my real name, not a pseudonym – I own what I write. #24

You’re presenting a false dichotomy. The only two choices are NOT “attempt to dishonor a good man with old news” or blindly accept whatever Chairman Brogdon decides–at face value and without question. The Repubican Party is not some mind-control cult where asking questions, raising concerns, and critical thought are slapped down and belittled. Mr. Ryan may wind up being the best thing that ever happened to the Oklahoma Republicans–the doesn’t mean that people don’t have legitimate concerns or valid questions at this point.

Ronda said, ” the GOP is losing the image of being comprised of a bunch of rich, old, white guys – the new look includes tattoos, body piercings and even pink hair!”

So tell us, Ronda, precisely what is the problem with being a wealthy, successful Anglo American? Hmmmm??? You know, sometimes it’s AMAZING how much some of you Ron-Paul-Libertarians resemble Democrats.

And now for the judgmental non-sinners to post…

  5. Edmond Voter, 05 May, 2015

Who cares??? TC is a gracious and kind gentleman who cares deeply about this state and nation. He is a hard worker who is bringing a new energy to the party.

Isn’t it a shame there are still those who want to throw rocks at others in the GOP instead of working together for the good of the next generation. Shame on “The Logician” who seems to have too much time on their hands and had to go dig up dirt to throw.

Thank you, TC, for being the bigger man who doesn’t respond with vile retribution toward those with little minds and hateful actions.

  6. Holly Gerard, 05 May, 2015

I truly wonder the real reason to bring this story to attention – well after the fact and certainly not taking into account the growth and hard work both personally and professionally that so many have seen first hand as TC has stood strong in support of the party since. He has closed that personal chapter referenced in his life. There are many, many in this world who have made mistakes and some who have done things that are hard to fathom – what does it say about us as Republicans and Christians if we do not mentor, do not reach out, do not recognize, congratulate and let people move on and gain trust and responsibility as they prove themselves? If we require that people must never have faced down a challenge and overcome, the Republican Party and Christian values that we claim will be extinct in no time. The TC that I know and count as a friend has worked tirelessly to advance the Party, is active in Young Republicans and in his county gop, has elected great Republican candidates, drove all over the state putting up signs and helping with grassroots and community events (standing with us defending Republicans as groups like “Stand for Children,” who has a positive article feature on McCarville at the moment, spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in 2014 trying to defeat multiple state legislator Republicans in the general election – and is now the recipient of an OKGOP unanimously-passed resolution at the state convention condemning their behavior on multiple issues), made countless phone calls, volunteered on education and legislative issues, all while performing outreach to the next generation and even endearing himself to us ‘old-fashioned’ Republicans too as we hear his personal story and watch as he tirelessly throws himself all-in on projects. His ability to organize and grow enthusiasm among all age groups is vitally important to our Party’s continuation. If those who are now casting stones had stood beside TC for the last two years like many of us as we worked on projects for the party, they would understand what he brings to the table to assist in his new role. Chairman Brogdon and Estela Hernandez are working hard to put our Party on solid footing, and TC brings technological, organizational, and grassroots expertise to the job. Big Tent – tattoos to bridge players and yes, even those with a past who have gone on to re-earn trust – that is the Republican party now – we don’t just welcome those who were ‘born with a silver spoon’ and never did something they clearly regret and have corrected. Please let’s get working on 2016 and more GOP in office, having a successful SRLC, and make our Party strong financially again – what we should be devoting our efforts toward!! P.S. If you aren’t a Minuteman yet – visit okgop.com to sign up and show you support our party too!

  7. David Van, 05 May, 2015

    Well stated, Holly.
I do not know of anyone who has witnessed anything from TC other than tireless volunteering and motivating others.
The details of this report are missing so that each reader gets to insert his own wild imaginations. And more often than not, our own prejudices are probably heavily influencing our words.

  8. Dick Grace, 05 May, 2015

Dress and cut your hair however you please. I have seen no indication that there has been repentance on the part of Mr. Ryan for his spousal abuse or his other actions. While he is certainly free to do these things in our great country is there no one with more reserve and class to fill this position? If not I am sure we can count on him in stressful situations not to bring more controversy to the election process and distract the discussion from more important matters such as saving this country.

  9. Howard Houchen, 05 May, 2015

I met TC Ryan about 6 years ago and have been fortunate enough to get to know him and work with him on Republican oriented projects across the state. I know absolutely nothing about the situation regarding the 2 misdemeanors alluded to in this article but I do know I have never witnessed nor heard of TC Ryan having a volatile nature to him. Quite the contrary, I have been with TC in situations where others may have wanted to act out and TC was always among the first to call for calm and professional restraint.
TC has been a selfless volunteer for many candidates and conservative causes across the state, volunteering hundreds, more like thousands, of hours to promote espoused Republican principles. For every mistake he makes (we ALL make mistakes) there are literally hundreds good deeds.

Flipping off a cardboard likeness of Romney while having an arm around a cardboard likeness of Reagan???? to quote Marlon Brando in the movie ‘Apocalypse Now’ — “The horror, the horror….the horrorrrrrrr”

  10. Tina, 13 May, 2015

Howard, I know nothing of these issues either personally,as you stated yourself…so that alone should bring pause until we see this investigated thoroughly. Also, it is not condemnation to say that although we all make mistakes they are NOT equal…domestic abuse is horrible and the fact that he did so in the NOT so distant past concerns me as well. These are two things that is is shameful to overlook just because you personally or anyone else has had a good experience with him….There are times in this life that we disqualify ourselves from serving because we made certain choices in the past that do indeed change our lives from now on. God’s tell us that consequences are a real thing.. Again, this is not from the distant past but the recent past, and done to females. I am disappointed in those women and men who so easily have dismissed this and purport to be against this. How unbalanced we become when we post in passion rather than reason and logic. I wish Ryan no ill, and hope we see what this is all about logically…but it still doesn’t mean you put someone in place of leadership. Life disqualifies us sometimes and while God forgives it still stands…

  11. PeanutSection, 05 May, 2015

Let’s call a spade a spade, shall we? After the “super secret invitation only” we are ALL ABOUT TRANSPARENCY meeting on Saturday it became very apparent for most of us that TC is the pseudo Chair. Mr. Brogden ran with his good name just so TC could be handed the reins before the ink was dry. If Mr. Ryan wanted to be chair he should have put his name up instead of hiding behind Brogden.

There are those of us who know TC pretty well, if not better and we are all waiting for his temper to get the best of him (as usual) some day and manhandle a female at the party HQ. He won’t be able to make that go away so quickly.

  12. Rick Stiles, 05 May, 2015

That “super secret invitation only” Saturday meeting was for all GOP county chairs and vice chairs. I am neither, but attended with my wife. I was not turned away. In fact, I was allowed full participation. It was a wonderful meeting with complete openness and interaction by all. Chairman Brogdon introduced Mr Ryan as the go-to guy for improving the party’s electronic informational needs, which has been woefully inadequate. Mr Ryan had the floor for a long period because he allowed every person to ask questions, which he answered until all were satisfied.
It was quickly apparent that he is a passionate man. Maybe sometime in the past his passions overrode his good judgement. It happens to ALL. The only difference between me, you, him or any other would be when it last happened, how far it went and the amount of publicity it garnered. Our legal system has been satisfied, so give him the same break you would request in his situation.

  13. Ronda Vuillemont-Smith, 05 May, 2015

Don’t you think it’s a wee bit hypocritical to whine about “transparency” while you post under a pseudonym (Peanut Section)? So, let’s do call a spade a spade – if you have the balls to put something in print at least use your real name when doing it. Own it!! A true leader leads by example, not by hiding behind a sarcastic, fake name.

For the record, had TC put his name on the ballot even he would have beat Dave Weston, who couldn’t manage to get even 25% of the vote. Heck, Tulsa County brought in a whopping 24 votes for the much loved, much adored DW. That alone speaks volumes. Sour grapes perhaps?

I too know TC very well, I call him “friend”. Speculating on his losing his temper and manhandling a female at party HQ is a far reach and totally uncalled for. How ’bout you concern yourself with YOUR local GOP – take care of your own house before you concern yourself with others.

  14. Disenfranchised, 05 May, 2015

Edmond Voter…’The Logician’ was merely re-posting an article from this reputable journalist. The saddest thing that I have observed from the GOP convention is that the very calls for unity from your wing of your party has been the one to attack the so called ‘establishment’ while ‘establishment’ people like Pam Pollard and Tom Cole have stepped up and been the only ones calling for ‘unity’… and people wonder why I left the party.

  15. Carrie Overton, 05 May, 2015

As a member of the Oklahoma chapter of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, it sickens me that the Chairman of the Oklahoma Republican Party would appoint this thug to such a high ranking position and then brush it off as if it was no big deal. This is a serious matter and when people such as yourselves don’t take it seriously, it sets us back in our cause to eradicate this horror from the lives of women nationwide. Mr Ryan and Mr Brogdon should both be ashamed of themselves. I am going to make sure that both our local and national chapters hear about this gross incompetence. What a black eye on our party and our state.

  16. castor, 05 May, 2015

  18. Tom Payne, 05 May, 2015

Rather than dredge up old new and attempt to splinter the GOP party, why don’t you focus on the real culprits, Stand for Children. Your recent article left out a pretty important piece of information about them: Their fake petition trying to sway Oklahoma legislation promoting Common Core. They are the true enemy of the GOP, not Mr Ryan.

Focus on what’s pertinent, not sleazy attacks:

  19. Jenni White, 05 May, 2015

Oh my goodness! I am so shocked by the accounts of TC Ryan brought to light by this publication – said no true conservative anywhere. Unfortunately, the motivator of fear has long been used by those well established in the Republican Party. For years, the Party faithful were motivated by fear of the Democrats, however once Republicans took the majority in both the Oklahoma House and Senate, another specter had to emerge from the wings to provide needed propulsion. Now, fear must be mongered of the Party’s “fringe” – those defined as having a real and definite interest in promoting the ideals and constructs of the Constitution of the United States and the specific notion of individual liberty. One of the reasons many of us took 2 and 3 (or more) Saturdays out of our lives this spring, was in preparation of attending this year’s Republican convention – to elect a Chairman with values closer to our own. See, there’s the rub. Big Tent Republicans are the ones scared right now because they realize that the grassroots Republicans – the ones who do more than just donate money; the ones who make phone calls, put out signs and run campaigns – spent their time and energy ELECTING A LIBERTY CANDIDATE. Wow, that’s gotta hurt. I mean, the Big Tent just took a direct hit from an F5. What else is left but to continue to demonize those who don’t want to be under the thumb of the Republican-led government? After all, why are Oklahomans getting ‘driving while texting’ laws and laws that create ‘fees’ instead of taxes (so as to lull the public at large into thinking our tax burden is shrinking) and edicts that subjugate builders and remodelers to more government regulations and licensing, if not for those in power currently – the Republicans? What’s left but to tear down those who want, not only to espouse individual liberty, but set about to create and uphold that ideal? The boots on the ground get your game – seriously. We’ve studied the playbook and know the plays. Quit it. Just stop; it’s a waste of your time and energy. Show some grace. Get in the trenches with the rest of us actually willing to put our money where our shoe leather is and make a difference. Otherwise, zip it – we’re moving on without you.

  20. Nate F, 05 May, 2015

I bet if you look for the court documents or arrest report, they have mysteriously “disappeared.” This reeks. There should be resignations over this.

  21. Lisa, 05 May, 2015

I can’t believe all of the women defending this creep! I hope something like this never happens to you or someone you love!

  22. William Marshal, 05 May, 2015

Hitting a woman is not okay.

  23. David Van, 05 May, 2015

    How about we;
report everyone’s delinquent student loan payments, speeding tickets, late library book fines, rude driving habits, ugly neckties, and messy cars?
Is this the new Republican Party ?
Is this the new conservative media?
Is this the way we vicariously replay party elections?
If someone misuses their position in public or advocates against our party’s principles, then it’s my business to become fully informed before making a prudent judgment. But right now our conservative media looks less respectable than the Tulsa Whirled. And that’s a very low bar to limbo under.

  24. William Marshal, 05 May, 2015

Seriously? Female abuse is akin to ugly neckties and a messy car? If those are the values of a Republican party, then count me out.

  25. Adam Bates, 07 May, 2015

How about we don’t equate spousal violence with speeding or wearing an ugly tie?

  26. Allie Burgin, 05 May, 2015

I am very sad this has happened and cast a shadow on a good start. This is not the way to unite Oklahoma’s Republicans. We need to get rid of the side issues and distractions and focus on the real problems. I keep saying give the leadership the benefit of the doubt. Having said that let me add, We need moral law abiding leaders that we can get behind.

  27. Vernon Woods, 05 May, 2015

You people defending this guy remind me of the libs defending Clinton (female) on all the crap she’s done.

    He’s a good guy – she’s a saint. What’s the diff? They both got a history.

  28. Carl, 05 May, 2015

David Van, of the items you listed, only a speeding ticket is against the law, and it is no where near as bad as beating a woman…. in front of a minor….. and interfering with a 911 call. If it was Mr Weston in Mr Ryan’s shoes, you all would be calling for him to resign and be cast in with the sodomites. Hypocrites.

  29. William Marshal, 05 May, 2015

Additionally, it shows a lack of judgment on the new party chair to have a first hire be someone with this record. Your party should have been smarter than to elect someone with this poor of judgment. To admit you know you are hiring someone who hits women takes this atrocity to an entirely other level. Did Brogdon not think Democrat operatives would not find this out and use it against Republicans? It looks like his arrogance prevents him from using any sound judgment.

  30. PeanutSection, 06 May, 2015

Good point William. The silence from the OKGOP Women and Pam Pollard is deafening to say the least. Brogden should be ashamed of himself and so should this David who has a blog. Happy Mother’s Day to their wives (if there are any) and their mothers too.

  31. John, 06 May, 2015

Maybe David is taking the bullet for TC, trying to deflect the attention away from the GOP’s new Abuser-in-Chief. Regardless, I am ultimately more concerned with Mr Brogdon’s carefree approach to domestic violence. Sure, Jesus teaches us to forgive, but he also teaches us to render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s. TC broke the law and pled guilty in court to the charges. He should be held responsible and part of that responsibility is taking away his ability to hold such a high ranking office within the party. But, apparently, that doesn’t matter to Mr. Brogdon.

  32. Ms Independant, 06 May, 2015

    Where do we even begin?

Every man and woman has the liberty to behave in any way they like. But for every action there is a reaction or in some instances consequences.

If Mr. Ryan would prefer to behave in a way where he’s flipping the bird to the GOP nominee and post it on social media – totally fine.

But don’t expect anyone to be interested in having you as an actual representative of the Republican Party, hence the reaction or consequence. Especially when your public response on the radio is more of a mad you got caught, not so much repentant for doing it. If you don’t ever offer even a feigned public apology for such an action then be ready to handle the consequences. GOP activist want someone who will excite the party about the presidential nominee, promote them and encourage others to vote for them. They don’t want someone who is disrespectful and indifferent in a position of authority or public eye. There’s a REASON why Tulsa County wanted him gone.

When a man chooses to abuse a women in front of children, there are consequences and public records. There is never, ever, any reason one can justify such behavior. Period.

Mr. Brogdon has, yet again, shown a lack of judgement by installing Mr. Ryan in a public position of some perceived authority.

Especially when he had plenty of other good people to select from and frankly better options.

His choice of action also has a reaction, or consequence. Mr. Brogdon not only loses the respect of his peers and fellow Republicans but his choice causes a level of concern in regards to what else will this man do? Mr. Brogdon will most likely blow this off with little regard but it shows many of us more of his true character.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s unsuccessful in raising money for the state GOP and is unable to pay himself and Mr. Ryan.

Most likely some government office will be up for re-election next year and Mr. Brodgon will choose to step away as state chair and run for it because it’ll provide a steady stream of taxpaying dollars as income for him. And I would expect that, yet again, he will not win.

Soon Mr. Brodgon will wish for the good ol’ days when he had that six figure salary in the insurance commissioners office with a budget to militarize the fraud department up some more.

  33. James Stevens, 06 May, 2015

As a gay Republican (yes, there is such a thing), I am absolutely opposed to abuse of any kind, it’s evil. To defend it is even worse. I have read some of this guys blogs and he is awful. Does not get both sides of the story, does not do interviews, it’s pathetic. So, his lack of ethics or a moral compass here does not surprise me. What does surprise me is that he is somehow Chaplain of the Tulsa Area Republican Assembly (TARA), according to Ms Independent. I wonder how Christ would feel about his defense of domestic abuse?
