Governor Fallin Monday signed Senate Bill (SB) 1078, the first piece of legislation recommended by the Oklahoma Commission on Opioid Abuse.
SB 1078 adds fentanyl, a powerful opioid, to the list of drugs eligible for a felony trafficking charge, along with marijuana, cocaine, heroin, oxycodone and others. It takes effect Nov. 1.
“The use of fentanyl has been spreading across our country with devastating effects,” said Fallin. “This measure will help our law officers crack down on drug traffickers who intend to sell fentanyl to Oklahomans. I again applaud Attorney General Mike Hunter for creating this opioid abuse commission to come up with policy recommendations to help deal with combating opioid abuse in our state.”
Cracking down on opioids has been one of Hunter’s primary causes since he was appointed attorney general by Fallin in February 2017.
