False Polling Place Text Message Warning

Oklahoma State Election Board Secretary Paul Ziriax is warning voters that a false text message about polling places is making the rounds. Ziriax issued the voter alert on Monday. A voter received the false text on Friday. The State Election Board has turned over the case to law enforcement.

“Disinformation about the voting process is a real threat. Voters should be very cautious about phone calls, emails, social media posts and text messages containing false information about elections – and report suspicious communications to election officials immediately,” Ziriax said.

The text message indicated the voter’s polling place had changed and then asked to confirm her name. The phone number provided for the response is reportedly a mail escort service.

If a polling place is changed, affected voters are notified by the County Election Board through the U.S. Postal Service.

“Election officials will never contact you by text message to tell you your polling place has changed,” Ziriax said.
