House Approves Retail Theft Penalty Legislation

Senate Bill 1450 lowers the felony threshold for theft to $500, gives organized retail crime a definition in state statute, and sets penalties based on stolen property value. The Oklahoma House approved the bill sending it back to the Senate for more work.

Representative John George says this bill is the result of the recommendations from the Organized Retail Crime Task Force.

“Oklahoma urgently needs to implement practical legislation based on the recommendations of the Organized Retail Crime Task Force to address alarming crime rates,” George said. “Senate Bill 1450, a direct result of the task force’s efforts, not only holds violent offenders responsible but also addresses the problem of organized retail theft.”

The measure also allows the Attorney General’s Office to hire more agents to investigate organized retail crime.

The Senate author of SB 1450 is President Pro Tem Greg Treat.
