Retooled Cybercrime Bill Heads Back to Governor

The House approved the corrected language of House Bill 1759 meant to address the growing threat of cybercrime. The Governor’s staff found an effort which could have made hacking legal in Oklahoma. They sent it back, instead of vetoing the legislation.

The updated language for the Oklahoma Computer Crimes Act addresses issues surrounding ransomware attacks.

Representative Trish Ranson and Senator Zack Taylor are the authors of HB 1759.

“This is a growing problem and like so many areas of government, we have to adapt to a changing world,” Ranson said. “I hope this legislation is the first step in creating innovative cybercrime legislation in the future.”

The city of Tulsa recently suffered a ransomware attack. The FBI says such attacks are becoming more common.

The bill now heads back to the Governor.
