Hofmeister Declares for 2022 Governor’s Race, Set to Flip Parties

The 2022 Oklahoma Governor’s Race just took a dramatic turn if an exclusive Tulsa World story holds true. Republican State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister has come out swinging against Governor Kevin Stitt’s handling of the pandemic in declaring her candidacy for governor. She also called Stitt’s request for an investigative audit of the Department of Education a political attack on her and public education.

Tulsa World’s Andrea Eger and Randy Krehbiel write Hofmeister will change her political affiliation from Republican to Democrat. Currently, that means she will face former Oklahoma Senator Connie Johnson for the Democratic nomination.

So far, two Republicans other than Stitt have launched campaigns for governor. Dr. Ervin Yen began his campaign because he was unsatisfied with how Stitt handled the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in Oklahoma. Dr. Mark Sherwood is a Naturopathic Doctor who also served on the Tulsa Police Department for 24-years.

Natalie Bruno has launched a campaign as a Libertarian candidate. She is a former CASA volunteer and currently serves on the associate board for Oklahoma Lawyers for Children.

Activist Paul Tay, who is awaiting a preliminary hearing for charges of rape, kidnapping and assault in Tulsa County, declared a campaign for governor as an Independent.

When Superintendent Hofmeister switches parties, it will raise the average IQ in both of them.
