Former Dept. of Ed Employees Suing Walters for Wrongful Termination, Violations of Free Speech

Two former Oklahoma Department of Education employees who were fired late last week for allegedly leaking information have filed federal lawsuits against State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters and his chief policy advisor of administrative services Matt Langston. Those lawsuits allege wrongful termination and a violation of their constitutional right to free speech.

Tulsa World’s Andrea Eger writes Langton emailed employees a final warning that termination would be the consequence of leaking documents to unauthorized individuals, including the media.

One of the plaintiffs claims she was fired for “leaking” that email. The other former employee claims he was fired after sharing information with Attorney General Gentner Drummond and an Oklahoma state representative.
