Affordable Housing Commission Bill Moves Forward

The Senate Business and Commerce Committee approved House Bill 2724, setting up the Oklahoma Affordable Housing Commission. It would oversee the planning, coordination, and strategy to address the housing shortage in Oklahoma.

Senator Julia Kirt, the author of HB 2724, says this commission could impact the lives of thousands of Oklahomans looking for an affordable home.

“Oklahomans are struggling, and we need to make housing more affordable,” Kirt said. “Right now, Oklahoma is short 71,000 homes and we don’t have a plan to fill that gap. This bipartisan commission will help us work together on real housing solutions.”

The Affordable Housing Commission would have 15 members appointed by legislative leaders and the governor. Members would need to be experts in the field from rural, urban, and Tribal nations.

HB 2724 is now eligible to be considered on the Senate floor.
