Bice: Backing the Blue

By Congresswoman Stephanie Bice

There is no more noble duty than to serve others. Officers throughout Oklahoma, and across the nation put their lives on the line everyday so our communities are safer. Law enforcement is our essential line of defense in maintaining law and order, and they deserve our full support.

Since becoming a Member of Congress, I have had the opportunity to spend more time with law enforcement in the State and throughout the Fifth Congressional District. I visited areas devastated by tornadoes with them, went on “ride a- longs” in the Oklahoma City Metro area, and toured forensic and cyber labs. I am always in awe of their hard work and dedication. During Police Week, I want to thank all law enforcement for their sacrifices. This week is a time to reflect on the courage and selflessness of our law enforcement officers, and to express our deepest gratitude for their unwavering commitment to serving and protecting.

I have always supported law enforcement, and my support does not waver from one week to the next. After my colleagues across the aisle implemented multiple efforts to defund the police, many cities are in turmoil. These cities are facing increased lawlessness and are even struggling with recruiting new officers to join the force. As evidence of these shortsighted policies, in 2023, more than 370 law enforcement officers were shot in the line of duty. This is a 21% increase from 2020.

House Republicans will always back the blue. Our officers work to solve new challenges every day from confronting violent crime and drug trafficking to responding to natural disasters, and other crises. They put their lives on the line every time they put on their uniform, and their sacrifice must never be forgotten.

This week we are considering numerous pieces of legislation that will provide law enforcement with the resources, training, and support they need to do their jobs effectively and safely. House Republicans will vote on the Improving Law Enforcement Officer Safety and Wellness Through Data Act as well as a resolution that will condemn calls to defund the police. We also cannot ignore the effects that Biden’s border policies have had on communities throughout the country. To that end, the House will vote on legislation which requires the Attorney General to report to Congress on how the border crisis affects law enforcement and a resolution which condemns the Border crisis and its effects on law enforcement at local, state, and federal levels.

One of the greatest strengths of law enforcement is their ability to bridge gaps, to forge connections, and to build trust within our communities. For our officers, stopping criminals, saving innocent lives, and helping our communities is more than a job. It is a way of life. Thank you for everything you do to protect and safeguard our communities.  One of the greatest strengths of law enforcement is its ability to bridge gaps, to forge connections, and to build trust within our communities.
