Governor Kevin Stitt replaced three members of the State Board of Education saying he made the move because of “needless political drama.” The Governor appointed Ryan Deatherage, Michael Tinney, and Chris VanDenhende to the Board. They will replace Katie Quebedeaux, Kendra Wesson, and Donald Burdick.
“Nothing is more important than ensuring Oklahoma kids have the best education possible,” said Stitt. “After months of headlines followed by disappointing NAEP scores this month, it’s clear that our education infrastructure has fallen prey to needless political drama. If we want to be the best state for business, we need to make sure our kids have a path to success. It’s time for some fresh eyes and a renewed focus on our top ten goals.”
The sudden change in the Board’s makeup had State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters pushing back with a post on the social media platform, X.
Sarak Lepak and Zach Archer will remain on the State Board of Education. There is another seat on the Board which Stitt is expected to fill.
Deatherage, Tinney, and VanDenhende will need to receive approval from the Oklahoma Senate.
