Two lawsuits have been filed with the Oklahoma Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of Senate Bill 1027. That measure was signed into law and puts a cap on registered voters’ signatures from any single county. It adds other regulations and is retroactive.
The Oklahoman’s Alexia Aston writes one lawsuit asks the courts to declare the “retroactive provision” to be unconstitutional. The other lawsuit claims that SB 1027 is outright unconstitutional.
Proponents of the law say that rural voters have been left out of the initiative petition process because organizations trying to put issues on the ballot concentrate on the more populous urban areas.
