Vance Air Force Base Chosen for New Air Force Pilot Training Aircraft

Vance Air Force Base in Enid has been selected as one of the U.S. Air Force’s main operating bases for the new T-7A Red Hawk trainer, bringing a multibillion-dollar investment to northwest Oklahoma and securing the base’s role in training future military pilots.

The Air Force announced it will replace Vance’s aging T-38C training aircraft with the new T-7A as part of its pilot training modernization effort. The transition includes construction of new operations, maintenance and support facilities, along with delivery of the aircraft. The Air Force estimates the aircraft investment alone could total up to $2 billion.

Congressman Frank Lucas praised the decision, saying Vance’s extensive training airspace, lower operating costs and existing infrastructure made it well suited for the new mission.

The T-7A Red Hawk is designed to replace the Air Force’s decades-old T-38 fleet and better prepare pilots to fly current and future fighter aircraft. The training system combines the new aircraft with advanced flight simulators, updated ground-based instruction and modernized facilities.

Community leaders said the selection is expected to strengthen Vance’s long-term mission while bringing additional personnel and economic activity to the Enid area. They also noted the growth will increase demand for housing and infrastructure as the base expands its operations.
