A new Sooner Survey shows Oklahoma’s Republican runoff for governor is deadlocked, with Gentner Drummond and Mike Mazzei each receiving support from 44% of likely runoff voters.
The survey of 600 likely Republican primary voters was conducted August 3-6 by Cole Hargrave Snodgrass & Associates. Thirteen percent of respondents were undecided. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4%.
The poll found notable differences among groups of Republican voters. Drummond leads Mazzei by seven points among women, while Mazzei holds a six-point advantage among men. Mazzei leads by three points in rural counties, while Drummond has a three-point advantage in Oklahoma’s two major metropolitan areas.
The largest divide comes from how voters describe themselves politically. Among the 38% who identify as “Trump Republicans,” Mazzei leads Drummond 62% to 22%. Drummond leads 60% to 30% among the 56% who identify as “Traditional Republicans.”
Part of the polling was conducted around the Griffin Communications gubernatorial debate. Among the 149 voters surveyed before the debate, Mazzei led by four points. Drummond led by one point among the 451 voters interviewed during the following three days. Pollster Pat McFerron described the five-point difference as unusual, saying he seldom sees debates shift voter sentiment.
