It is always a privilege to recognize the men and women who serve our nation. This year, I have had the honor to host several Vietnam Veteran Recognition Ceremonies across Oklahoma’s Fifth Congressional District. These events pay tribute to veterans who served on active duty between November 1, 1955, and May 15, 1975, the years of the conflict in Vietnam. By holding these ceremonies in communities throughout central Oklahoma, we were able to reach as many veterans as possible while allowing their families and the community to participate in the ceremonies.
The Vietnam War claimed the lives of more than 58,000 Americans, but many others were taken prisoner during the conflict. Those who served during this era faced not only the hardships of war but also the challenges of returning to a divided nation. Too many Vietnam veterans were never properly thanked or recognized for their service when they came home. While no ceremony can ever fully repay the debt we owe our Vietnam veterans, these ceremonies are one small way to express our nation’s gratitude and recognize the courage, sacrifice, and selfless service of those who answered the call to defend our country during a time of great danger and uncertainty.
Oklahoma has a proud tradition of military service, and the impact of our veterans can be seen in every corner of our state. One of the most meaningful parts of these ceremonies was hearing veterans share their stories and seeing so many spouses, children, grandchildren, and loved ones join us. Military service is never carried by one person alone. Families also sacrifice through long deployments, uncertainty, and time apart, providing unwavering support every step of the way. Their strength, resilience, and commitment deserve our gratitude as well. It was an honor to recognize the veterans and their families who call Oklahoma’s Fifth Congressional District home.
The legacy of our Vietnam veterans continues to inspire the next generation of Americans who choose to wear the uniform. The values of courage, duty, and love of country remain as important today as ever. To each Vietnam veteran and military family across Oklahoma’s Fifth Congressional District, thank you. Your service and sacrifice have left a lasting impact on our state and our nation, and it is one of the greatest honors to recognize you.
