Oklahoma Lawmakers Consider Future of Road User Fees and Taxes

As cars become more fuel efficient, alternative fuel vehicles become more available, and Oklahoma drivers hit the road less, it puts downward pressure on the collection of taxes and fees which help the state maintain its roads and bridges. During an interim study this week, lawmakers considered possible future actions necessary to keep roadways safe.

Tulsa World’s Steve Metzer writes one of the considerations was “road use charges.” That would use some kind of system to track drivers’ use of roads and charge them a tax per mile.

One of the major hurdles is privacy concerns of motorists and how to collect taxes from interstate drivers.
