Stand for Children Oklahoma, a nonprofit dedicated to ensuring that every child has the support and tools they need to succeed, is asking state lawmakers to set aside $100 million in this year’s budget to fund education reforms previously passed by the Legislature.

“Oklahoma owes it to our children to fight for a state budget that creates excellent schools and higher standards for all Oklahoma students,” said Brian Hunt, Stand for Children Oklahoma executive director.

Previously passed reforms in need of additional funding include Reading Sufficiency Act, teacher leader effectiveness, common core standards and end of instruction exams.

“Oklahomans are known for our pioneering spirit and strong sense of community, and education is one area where we can and must do better,” Hunt said. “We can ensure prosperity for our children by strengthening our public education system and supporting changes that help our students be prepared for college and career training.”

Stand for Children Oklahoma recently launched a petition asking community leaders, parents and teachers to express their support for further investment in improving Oklahoma schools. “The governor and legislative leaders need to know we support a strong commitment to increased funding for education and that we will stand with them as they work to make strategic investments that put Oklahoma on a path to a stronger economic future,” Hunt said.

There will never be enough funding for education until school districts are required to merge or share administrative functions.
