FOP Pulls Shadid Support, Cites ‘Recent disclosures’

The Oklahoma City Fraternal Order of Police announced today that its Executive Board has decided not to continue its support of Oklahoma City Councilman Ed Shadid in his bid to unseat incumbent Mick Cornett.

Shadid’s campaign has been rocked by his admissions of domestic violence and the use of cocaine, LSD, Ecstasy, and marijuana, among other allegations.

In September, Shadid’s campaign was buoyed by the early endorsement of Oklahoma City’s police union.

But today, In an e-mailed “Message from the President”, John George sent his membership the following:

“In light of recent disclosures made by Councilman Shadid  to the Oklahoma Gazette in respect to his drug use, that was not made to our membership, the Executive Board has decided to not actively be involved in the campaign at this time.  We will not take any further action or spend and more money, until the Membership has a chance to meet on Jan. 9th, to discuss the issue. I am going to speak to Councilman Shadid to see if will issue an explanation to our members and if I get that I will send it out at that time. The FOP still feels strongly that the next Mayor should prioritize increased police staffing, and we will continue to advocate aggressively for that position through the election and beyond.”
