Duke University School of Law today announced the election of Nathan Atkins to the position of president of the Duke Bar Association. He will replace outgoing President Jana Kovich beginning immediately.

Atkins, 29, is a second-year student and native of Edmond. He is the first Oklahoman elected to the position,  and one of only two Oklahomans currently enrolled at the Law School. Atkins is a 2004 graduate of Edmond Santa Fe High School.

The Duke Bar Association, founded in 1931, is both the student government of Duke Law School and a professional bar association. One of the Association’s most significant functions is overseeing the majority of Duke Law School’s nearly 60 student-led organizations. Organizations overseen by the Association are primarily responsible for planning the professional symposia and near-daily events at the Law School.

“Duke Law School is a vibrant community of students and scholars,” Atkins said. “Every day I’m inspired by the talents and contributions of my classmates — it’s an honor to work with them, and I know they will continue to accomplish great things in the private sector and in public service. I’m grateful to know them and for the opportunity to serve on their behalf.”

Atkins worked in public policy and government for six years prior to attending Duke Law School as a George R. Krouse, Jr. Scholar. He was part of the team that worked to elect now-U.S. Sen. James Lankford to Oklahoma’s Fifth Congressional District seat in 2010.
