Istook: Legal Immigrants Favor Democrats

By Ernest Istook

This is about legal immigration, not illegal.

For 30 years, an average one million people a year come here with permanent resident visas, approved by the executive branch. Then it takes 5 years to become a citizen.

Almost 90% of these arrivals come from Latin America, Asia or Africa.

These 30-million legal immigrants are not distributed evenly across America. The Associated Press reports they were a big factor making California and Illinois solid blue states, with Virginia now trending that way and Florida, Georgia, Arizona perhaps next.

Plus many are migrating from Puerto Rico to Florida due to economic problems. Of course, Puerto Ricans are already U.S. citizens.

Surveys show most new arrivals favor Democratic Party policies. President Obama and many in Congress propose expanding legal immigration far beyond this pace of a million a year.
