Lankford Wants to Change the Rules so Senate Process Gets Faster

Senator James Lankford is calling for a change in how the Senate deals with bills in an op-ed he wrote in The Washington Post on Monday. He’s calling the attention of the ability of the minority party to keep bills from being debated and amended. He wants the rule changed to allow for a simple majority to push bills to debate on the Senate floor.

OK For Floor Debate

“The minority party’s interference with motions to proceed (the motion to start debate) and the majority party’s ability to thwart amendment consideration are the hallmarks of a dysfunctional Senate – with both sides pointing the blame towards the other,” wrote Lankford. “As a result, the Senate no longer deserves the moniker of the ‘greatest deliberative body in the world.’”

Lankford contends by opening up the process for debate and amendments, bills could progress faster through the process while keeping with the mission to be the more deliberative body in Congress.
