Shumate Claims OU Making False Accusations

Former OU chief diversity officer and Oklahoma Senator Jabar Shumate is claiming the University of Oklahoma is making false accusations against his character. It was announced earlier this week Shumate and OU had parted ways.

The Oklahoman’s Kathryn McNutt writes during a Wednesday press conference Shumate claimed he was told to resign or be fired from his position created by former OU President David Boren in reaction to videos of a fraternity’s members singing a racist song. The university said Shumate was confronted with an audit that revealed misuse of assets and Shumate resigned. Shumate is considering legal action.

Shumate was hired by Boren while he was a sitting State Senator, a blatant violation of the Oklahoma Constitution, but admittedly very few people care about the Constitution. On another note, if it is a criminal act to offer someone a job that might dissuade them from running for office (in an election they might not even win) how much worse is it to offer them a job to leave office?
