Sooner Survey Tests Sentiment On Tax Cuts

The latest edition of the Sooner Survey is out, this one about the proposed income tax cuts now being discussed. Here are the questions and the responses:

1. As you may know, it has been proposed that

Oklahoma eliminate some tax credits currently in

place as a way to offset a decrease in the state

income tax. By eliminating some tax credits, we

could reduce Oklahoma’s state income tax from a

current rate of 5.25% to 4.75%. Would you favor or

oppose eliminating some tax credits in the state to

reduce the state income tax to 4.75%. (After

response, ask:) Would you say you would strongly

(favor / oppose) or only somewhat (favor / oppose)?

Strongly favor ………………..30%

Somewhat favor …………….22%

Somewhat oppose………….. 9%

Strongly oppose ……………..15%

Undecided (vol.) …………….24%

2. Do you favor or oppose phasing out the state income

tax in Oklahoma over the next 10 years? (After

response, ask:) Would you say you would strongly

(favor / oppose) or only somewhat (favor / oppose)?

Strongly favor ………………..33%

Somewhat favor …………….18%

Somewhat oppose…………..11%

Strongly oppose ……………..19%

Undecided (vol.) …………….20%

3. (Split the sample with the next question) Do you

agree or disagree with the following statement:

Oklahoma state government is too big and should be

cut with the savings passed along to taxpayers in the

form of a tax cut. (After response, ask:) Would you

say you strongly (agree / disagree) or only somewhat

(agree / disagree)?

Strongly agree ………………..34%

Somewhat agree …………….20%

Somewhat disagree ………..18%

Strongly disagree ……………11%

Undecided (vol.) …………….17%

4. (Split the sample with the previous question) Do you

agree or disagree with the following statement: I

would favor cutting government programs and

services so the savings can be passed along to

taxpayers in the form of a tax cut. (After response,

ask:) Would you say you strongly (agree / disagree)

or only somewhat (agree / disagree)?

Strongly agree ………………..40%

Somewhat agree …………….17%

Somewhat disagree ………..13%
