Emergency Prescription Bill Signed into Law

Governor Kevin Stitt signed Monday Senate Bill 1019 which makes it possible for pharmacists to dispense emergency medication to a customer who would die or suffer serious harm if they don’t take the medicine.

It means people who have chronic diseases like diabetes will have access to life saving medication.

The measure sets up the process for a patient who needs a refill of medication or a medical device but cannot get a prescription from his or her doctor. The pharmacist would attempt to reach the prescribing doctor and would need to have a record of past prescriptions for the patient.

The amount of the medicine dispensed on an emergency basis will be limited until the patient can secure a prescription from the doctor.

SB 1019 takes effect on November 1, 2019.
