Delegation on Pot: Mullin Will Not Support Legalization

While he didn’t respond to The McCarville Report’s inquiries about his stance on federal marijuana policy and the bills introduced to Congressional committees, Congressman Markwayne Mullin did provide his opinion during a town hall meeting in Muskogee on Friday. According to CNHI News Service’s D.E. Smooth, Mullin told the crowd he would never “vote to legalize marijuana in any way, shape or form.” The story also notes he isn’t pleased with Oklahoma’s medical marijuana law.

Mullin was commenting on the recent movement of H.R. 1595, known as the SAFE Banking Act of 2019. The House Financial Services Committee recently worked on the bill. It is awaiting a hearing in the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security. It would create a “safe harbor” for banks to do business with cannabis related businesses in states which have legalized it in some form.

Editor’s Note: Delegation on Pot is The McCarville Report’s series of stories on the stances held by the Oklahoma Congressional Delegation concerning marijuana policy. Because Oklahoma is one of the latest in a majority of states to legalize cannabis in some form, interest is beginning to turn to federal policy. More than two dozen pieces of legislation have been filed in Congress this year. Our Senators and Representatives will likely come across these bills in committee and on floor debate and votes.
