State Board of Ed Approves $3.29 Billion Budget Request

The State Board of Education Thursday approved a request of $3.29 billion to fund the next school year in Oklahoma public schools. The Fiscal Year 2021 budget is an increase of nearly $220 million from the current year’s budget. The increases are meant to hire additional teacher and counselors, reduce class size, and restore some instructional funding. Part of the additional funds would go to help teachers and school staff with health insurance benefits.

“This proposed budget reflects the real needs of Oklahoma students,” said Joy Hofmeister, State Superintendent of Public Instruction. “We have made great strides in teacher pay and must now continue our investment in classrooms and student support. This budget request will help us reach the goals outlined in our 8-year strategic plan, Oklahoma Edge.”

Oklahoma Edge is similar to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation’s Eight Year Plan. It lays out areas which need to be addressed in common education.
