Walters Calls for Bible Use as Classroom Instructional Materials

During the Thursday Oklahoma State Board of Education meeting, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters announced he has issued a new memo directing school districts to use the Bible as an instructional support in the classroom. The new directive from Walters impacts grades 5 through 12.

The Oklahoman’s Murray Evans writes Walter’s memo states that “Adherence to this mandate is compulsory.” It also indicated that further instructions on how this will be implemented and monitored will be coming ahead of the 2024/2025 school year.

The Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office issued a statement saying that the law already explicitly allows Bibles to be used for instructional purposes.

Critics say this distracts from the real need to improve education outcomes in schools.
